Your guttering collects rainwater running off the roof and directs it towards the property's drainage system. When it is working correctly, water flows away without repeatedly soaking the roofline or external walls.
Problems develop when joints begin to leak, brackets become loose or sections of guttering are damaged or poorly aligned.
When guttering leaks or overflows, rainwater can repeatedly run down the same section of external brickwork. Over time, this can contribute to penetrating damp, particularly where bricks are porous or mortar joints have deteriorated. Water entering through the masonry may eventually cause damp patches, staining or damaged plaster inside the property.
Faulty guttering can also affect fascia boards and the supporting roofline timbers, making early repairs important before the damage becomes more extensive.
Some problems can be resolved with a localised repair. Others require replacement, particularly when the existing system has several defects or is no longer securely supported.
Gutter repairs can be carried out independently of fascia and soffit replacement where the existing roofline boards remain sound.
A leaking gutter does not always need replacing in full.
A joint may leak because its seal has failed, or because the gutter has sagged and pulled the sections out of alignment. Replacing the seal alone will not resolve the problem if the supports are still incorrectly positioned.
Loose brackets can also indicate rotten fascia timber. Screwing them back into weakened wood will not hold the gutter securely when it fills with rainwater.
If the existing gutter profile is no longer available, replacing a longer section may be necessary to achieve a sound connection.

When guttering is extensively damaged, poorly supported or repeatedly leaking, installing a replacement system may be more practical than continuing with individual repairs.
We undertake gutter replacements for residential properties, including guttering that needs renewing independently of the fascia and soffit boards.
A replacement installation needs suitable support, secure brackets and correctly arranged outlets and connections.
The guttering must also be positioned to direct rainwater towards its outlets rather than allowing water to collect or escape along the roof edge.
Where the existing fascia boards or supporting timber have deteriorated, their condition needs to be considered before new gutter brackets are fitted.
We also undertake full uPVC fascia and soffit replacement where wider roofline work is required.
Guttering defects are often most noticeable during rainfall. Watching where water escapes can help identify the part of the system causing the problem.
Common warning signs include:
Water dripping from gutter joints:
Failed or displaced connections allowing rainwater to escape between sections.
Gutters sagging or pulling away:
Loose brackets, damaged fixings or deteriorated support along the roofline.
Water overflowing the gutter edge:
Rainwater escaping instead of reaching the outlet. This can result from blockages, alignment problems or insufficient drainage capacity.
Cracked or damaged gutter sections:
Visible breaks or defects allowing water to leak.
Standing water in the guttering:
Water remaining in sections that may not be draining towards their outlets correctly.
Water staining beneath the roofline:
Repeated runoff leaving visible marks on external walls or fascia boards.
Not every leak around the roof edge is caused by guttering. Water can also enter through damaged tiles, slates or leadwork. If the problem originates higher up the roof, see our roof repairs
Identifying the cause helps determine whether a repair or replacement is appropriate.
Cast-iron guttering is still found on older properties across Cramlington and Newcastle. Although cast iron is a strong material, it can deteriorate when its protective paintwork breaks down and the metal is exposed to moisture.
Rust commonly develops around joints, brackets and the underside of gutter sections. As corrosion progresses, the metal can weaken, eventually developing cracks or holes that allow rainwater to escape.
Leaking cast-iron gutters can cause particular problems when water repeatedly runs down external brickwork. Over time, this can contribute to penetrating damp, potentially resulting in damp patches, staining and damaged plaster inside the property.
Where cast-iron guttering has become heavily rusted or deteriorated, Toner Roofing recommends replacement rather than continuing to repair failing sections.
We can assess the condition of your existing guttering and provide a free quotation for replacement.
The decision usually comes down to the extent of the damage and the condition of the remaining guttering.
When a repair may be suitable
A leaking joint, displaced section or isolated defect may be repairable when the rest of the system is sound and compatible replacement parts are available.
Repairing the affected area can avoid the expense of renewing guttering that is otherwise performing properly.
When replacement may be the better option
Guttering with widespread cracking, failing connections or multiple damaged sections can become uneconomical to repair repeatedly.
A replacement may also be needed where the original system is insecure or the condition of the supporting roofline prevents it from being refitted properly.
The best option depends on the existing materials, the condition of the brackets and fascia boards, and how well the remaining sections are draining.
The cost of guttering work depends on the type of problem and the extent of the repair or replacement.
An isolated leaking joint is a different job from renewing the guttering around an entire property.
Factors that can affect the quotation include:
The length of guttering requiring repair or replacement.
The number of corners, joints and outlets.
The height of the roofline and access required.
The condition and compatibility of the existing guttering.
Whether sections can be repaired or need replacing.
Any deterioration affecting the fascia boards or supporting timber.
Properties with garages, extensions or several roof levels can also have more complicated guttering arrangements.
